Why I Love Viola Davis

I absolutely adore Viola Davis. Truly.
Not just because she’s a phenomenal scene stealing actress. (See her powerful turn in the 2008 drama Doubt. You almost forget Meryl Streep is even on camera with her!)

But because she’s the real deal. All around. Period.

I had the pleasure of hearing her speak during a post screening Q&A of The Help for which I’m sure she’ll be showered with accolades this awards season. She spoke candidly about what it’s like to be a Black actress in Hollywood and how it affected her decision to start her own production company.
And on October 17, Davis was honored at Elle’s 18th Annual Women in Hollywood event in LA.
Her acceptance speech – part trip down memory lane to her days as a dirt poor child living in Rhode Island, part rallying call to her colleagues to embrace and consider actors of color when casting films and developing material – was a sincere off-the-cuff expression of gratitude and her passion for the craft of acting and her dedication to changing the whitewashed Hollywood landscape and people’s one-dimensional perspective of the Black experience.
I love this!
